About Us

History

Realizing the opportunity for marine education and engagement in the community, Kai and Jim Evans founded Lubbock Aquarium, Inc. as a 501C3 non profit and together with the board of directors created the mission, vision and goals for the organization.

Mission

Our mission is to bring the ocean to the South Plains through engagement, exploration, education and environmental awareness.

Vision

The vision of the Lubbock Aquarium is to engage visitors with diverse species, inspire appreciation for our seas, and support wildlife conservation.

The Lubbock Aquarium is developing an educational facility and programs that will foster an interest and understanding of the science and conservation of the aquatic world. To achieve this goal, the Lubbock Aquarium is working with marine experts to develop a state of the art facility that is both interactive and educational to engage visitors of all ages. The “Ocean of the South Plains” will allow guests to enjoy the wonders of the ocean, rivers and lakes and their diverse species.

Future Location

Since its inception in February 2016, the Lubbock Aquarium is focusing on these 3 areas of marine education and conservation...

Conservation

The Lubbock Aquarium will inspire conservation and change by transforming what people know about the world’s oceans. In recent years, studies such as the “Living Planet Assessment,” show that global wildlife population has decreased by 58% since 1970. The Lubbock Aquarium will be part of the solution by educating visitors on the dangers facing marine life, promoting conservation efforts and encouraging community involvement.

Did You Know?

Stingrays are related to sharks. Their bodies are supported by cartilage instead of bones, and many species use their serrated tail as a primary form of defence. They live in shallow waters where they bury themselves in the sand, which enables them to hide from predators and sneak up on prey.
